Power of Attorney for Credit Card in the UAE: What to Name

A power of attorney for credit card lets a person you choose act for you on your card: ask for a replacement, close the account or settle a balance. Our lawyers and legal consultants draft, translate and handle your power of attorney in house, and we take it through ratification before a notary public.

The catch most people miss is the wording. A deed that says only “to deal with my bank” is a general agency, and the bank is likely to turn it away.

What a Power of Attorney for Credit Card Is For

You may be abroad, ill or simply unable to visit the bank. Your agent then does the card tasks in your name. Typical tasks are:

  • Asking the bank for a statement or a balance.
  • Paying off or settling the card balance.
  • Asking the bank to close the card account.
  • Collecting a replacement card, where the bank agrees.

Acceptance is decided by the bank that receives the document. We draft to our usual practice, and we advise you to ask your bank which wording it prefers before you sign.

General or Special Power of Attorney: Which One You Need

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2025, an agency may be general, special, conditional, or deferred to a future time (Article 869). An agency written in general terms gives the agent only acts of management (Article 871(1)). Any act beyond management and preservation needs a special agency that names the act (Article 870(1)). You can read the law on the UAE Legislation portal.

For a power of attorney for credit card matters, this means a special power of attorney is the safer choice. It names the bank, the card and each act the agent may do. What the Deed Must Name

Name each item clearly. We do not publish a copy-and-paste template, because your deed must fit your card and your bank.

  • Your full name and the agent’s full name, as in the ID documents.
  • The bank and the card or account the deed covers.
  • Each act the agent may do, written one by one.
  • Whether the agent may sign for you, receive money or close the account.
  • The term, if you want one. There is no general legal validity period; the term is whatever the document says.

Steps to Get It Done

1

Send us the bank, the card and the tasks your agent must do.

2

We draft the deed in Arabic and English, and we check every document before the appointment.

3

We book the notary appointment and attend it with you.

4

Ratification is carried out before a notary public. The notary public checks your ID, reads the document out and ratifies it.

Dubai documents in a foreign language need an Arabic translation by a certified translator (Dubai Law No. 4 of 2013, Article 27). The notary checks identity from an ID card, passport or other official State document (Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022, Article 7(1)). Our guide on how notarisation works at Dubai Courts explains the room and the process.

What to Bring

Federal and Dubai figures are different. Dubai Courts publishes its own fees, so we confirm the amount with the office that ratifies your document.

A general or commercial power of attorney is a commercial document on the MOFAIC list. Our own charge is quoted on enquiry, before any work starts, and is shown apart from the government fees.

What Gets a Deed Rejected

  • Wording that is too general for the act the bank is asked to do.
  • A blank field, or a name that does not match the ID.
  • A foreign document without its attestation chain.
  • Signing before the appointment.

Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2025 (Article 897) says an agency ends when the work is done, when its term expires, or on the death or loss of capacity of the principal or the agent.

Using It From or For Abroad

A document going abroad is ratified here and attested by MOFAIC. The receiving country decides what else it needs. For a document signed overseas and used in the UAE, read how to notarise a UAE power of attorney from abroad.
