It covers administrative acts on a car you already own or have agreed to buy, not the sale of it. The registration on a car they own is about to run out while they are abroad, or they have just agreed to buy a car and need it put into their name while they are away. Both are administrative jobs on a vehicle that is already yours, or is about to be. Neither one hands your car to anybody. UAE law splits what an agent may do into two groups. Acts of management and preservation sit on one side. Everything beyond them needs a special agency that specifies the type of act and the dispositions it entails, and Article 870 of Federal Decree-Law 25/2025 names sale among those acts. Keeping a car registered is the first kind of job. Selling it is the second. That difference is the reason a document written for a sale is not a substitute for one written for a renewal. A sale authority is drafted to move ownership away from you. A registration authority is drafted to keep the car where it is and let somebody else do the running around for you. Each one is named on its own, because a document that gestures at cars in general is weaker than one that says what the agent may do. ### Renewing a registration Authority to apply for the renewal of the registration on a named vehicle, and to sign whatever that renewal is recorded on. ### Putting a car into your name Authority to have a vehicle you have agreed to buy registered in your name, so the ownership record reflects the purchase you already made. ### Signing on your behalf Authority to sign applications, declarations and receipts connected with the registration, in your name and with the same effect as your own signature. ### Paying and receiving money Authority to pay any amount that falls due on the registration, and to receive any amount refunded, without opening up your wider finances. ### Appearing before the authority Authority to attend in person at the Roads and Transport Authority, and at any office the registration passes through, and to speak for you there. ### Passing the job to someone else A line saying whether the agent may appoint a substitute. Under Article 903, revoking the main agency automatically revokes every sub-agency taken from it. ## Renewal authority against sale authority People are often handed a vehicle power of attorney written for a sale and told it will do for everything. Article 870 requires a special agency specifying the type of act and the dispositions it entails, so everything below is our drafting practice built on that rule rather than a form anyone publishes. - The vehicle identified in full, so the document cannot be read as covering a second car you happen to own. - Each act named on its own line: renewal, registration in a named person’s name, signing, and collecting documents. - The Roads and Transport Authority named as the authority the registration goes through, along with any office connected to it. - The agent named exactly as their identity document spells it, since the notary verifies identity from an Emirates ID or a passport. - A term, because an agency ends when the term specified for it expires, and UAE law sets no fixed period of its own. - A closing line listing what is not granted: no sale, no mortgage, no export of the vehicle. ## How we handle it We draft, translate, check and attend. That page text dates from 2023, so we confirm the current position before booking anything. **What is the official fee for ratifying a power of attorney?** Under the federal schedule in Cabinet Resolution 19 of 2024, executing or notarising a general or special power of attorney is AED 100 per party, and notarising a translation included in the instrument is AED 50 per page. A private notary charges the same fee plus 30 percent as professional fees. Dubai Courts publishes its own schedule. **How long does it stay valid?** UAE law sets no fixed period for an agency. Article 897 of Federal Decree-Law 25/2025 ends an agency when the work is completed, when the term specified for it expires, or on the death or loss of capacity of either party. So the term is whatever the document says, which is why we write one in. **Can I cancel it once the car is registered?** Yes. Article 898 lets the principal revoke or restrict the agent’s authority at any time, unless the agency involves the right of a third party or was issued in the agent’s own interest. Article 899 makes the principal liable to compensate the agent for revoking at an inappropriate time or without acceptable justification. **I am outside the UAE and my registration runs out soon. What now?** Sign before a notary in that country, or before an accredited UAE consul. The document is then attested by that country’s foreign ministry, by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and by MOFAIC once it reaches the UAE. MOFAIC charges AED 150 for individual affairs documents and AED 2,000 for commercial ones.
